Questionnaire data analysis

For my questionnaire I decided it would be a good idea to give it to my focus group of 10.

There are an equal amount of girls and boys so I won’t be targeting a gender specific audience.

There is a small variety of age just to get a mix of opinions from every. Though, from this I have decided to tackle a 17+ audience to appeal to. This will mean more adult themes and a much more sophisticated video/song.

As the data shows that Alternative/rock music is the most popular I will be looking into this genre for my own promo as there is obviously a demand for it. I will be staying away from classic cheesy pop songs to create my music promo.

I found it interesting that the results here differed from my question of preferred genre. Pop is now in the line up, though when asked about this later in question five it became clear that people found themselves watching more pop videos just because they were there and more commonly found. The other half simply stated that this is what they just chose to watch. This could mean that in my product placement I must think of a way to make it more widely available.

Surprisingly, half the people in my focus group did not have a favourite video. Aside from Gaga the other favourite videos are in the Rock/Alternative category. I will be looking into at least one of these videos to analyse for my real media artifacts to see what makes it a good video and what elements I can take for my own inspiration. I may also look at other music videos from the artists mentioned as well as looking at my own favourite alternative music video The Cure – Lullaby.

When asked why these videos where their favourites they answered with numerous things. Some liked the visuals/camera particularly when they fit the music, others mentioned lighting and the overall feel of the video and some simply said they liked the narrative/thought it looked stylish. From this I gather that I must really think out the look and mood of the video and get it to fit the music very well, as well as it having a good narrative and looking stylish.

Gaga and Pulp were the only artists mentioned when it comes to a particular artist those questioned like to specifically watch the music videos of. Upon looking briefly at a few I would say it is because they are very stylized, unique, different, interesting. I would like to incorporate these features into my own promo. I also think it is vital now to analyse a Pulp video as they have been mentioned throughout this a lot and obviously have a successful way/style of using video promos. When asked those asked said they like Gaga/Pulp because they’re interesting, unusual, creative and weird – just as I had aniticipated.

I will be staying away from Hiphop, Metal and Dubstep videos as they have been seen as the weakest music videos with 7 people saying they wouldn’t want to or care if they improved because they either don’t like the music or aren’t interested.

When I asked if there were any specific videos anyone would like to see only three songs were suggested Nude – Radiohead, Brand New – Mixtape and La Dispute – Such Small hands. I may have to look further into this when deciding my song. They chose these songs because they either loved the song, thought the song had good lyrics or thought the song had great potential to have a music video for it.

Most people said they look for a music video with the visuals fitting the music, whether that be in what is being shown or the way the cuts fit the music. Others thought that a good story is what they look for – this was then illustrated through the next question when most people said that visuals and narrative were the most important, as well as it being a good song and showing off the artist. This let’s me know that I really need to think about editing and the visuals in my video in connection to the song. It also let’s me know that showing off the artists personality should be taken into account when planning my own. When asked why this was people said these aspects of visual and narrative etc have to create a certain mood, it has to be memorable and it needs to connect the artist to the audience.

Out of all asked youtube and TV musical channels were the only things used to watch music videos on. I will use this information later when thinking about the placement of my product. Lastly, the main thing that those asked said influenced them to buy music was the music that is popular at the time and other people, three said adverts and only one said music videos. This means that I will also have to focus on providing a good advert to accompany my music video promo.
